Objet’s Primitive Applications

Posted by scott On October - 11 - 2011

Objet just released a fascinating article on their Blog highlighting ancient tool-making techniques with a modern twist. The purpose of the BC – AD Project is to replicate primitive tools and reproduce them using Objet 3D printing technology. Using 3D scanners, they import data to develop custom handles and accessories. This just goes to show that Objet technology has a wide spectrum of applications. As you’ll read, this isn’t Objet’s first rodeo with prehistoric modeling either.

Kemeera and IDSA

Posted by scott On October - 10 - 2011

Did you know that Kemeera is a sponsor for IDSA events in San Francisco? This past week was a Design means Business event at the Wharton. We had the opportunity to network with fellow bay area designers and experience a fantastic presentation from MeeWha Lee, design leader for Oscar Mayer.

Just a taste of the event..

Want to create a revolutionary product or service?  You’ll need BOTH design and business.
MeeWha Lee centers innovation at the heart of her company. She focuses on the importance of the relationship between brand, packaging and product as the core connection for success as she leads the Design Innovation Function for one of the largest grocery brands in North America, Oscar Mayer (Kraft Foods).

Market trends, portfolio needs, leadership appreciation
are three pillars of corporate design

Model Painting

Posted by scott On October - 6 - 2011

Painting your Objet models provide a variety of benefits. Below are applications for finished models as well as 10 easy steps to producing perfectly-painted parts every time!

Painting 101

Applications for Finished Models

  1. Internal Use- communication between product designers, engineers, R&D team
  2. External Use- Customer feedback
  3. Exhibit and tradeshow displays
  4. Marketing/Photography
  5. Package Design- simultaneously create packaging while products are in production

10 Tips for Painting (spray can)

Objects should be printed in matte, which allows the printed part to absorb paint, dye, glue, etc.
If you print parts in glossy and plan on using post-processing methods, you will need to sand down the exterior shell

1. Clean part thoroughly. Use isopropyl alcohol to clean all surfaces with lint-free cloth

2. Allow object to dry completely

3. Prime surfaces to create a smooth clean surface if necessary

(Not to be used on flexible materials because they will crack)

4. Make sure you work in a well-ventilated area

5. Spray can should be shaken vigorously before use to create consistent viscosity

(The temperature of the room affects nozzle output. Colder environments cause poor paint quality)

(Let the spray can sit in tepid water for 10 minutes, if cold, then repeat step 5)

6. Spray 6-12 inches away to reduce blemishes and inconsistency of finish

7. Start and end spray OFF the object, which minimizes splatter marks

8. Apply multiple thin coats: provides consistency  and uniformity

9. Allow time to dry (room temp affects drying time). 15 or 20 minutes between coats

10. When finished with spray can, flip upside down and spray nozzle for 5 seconds to clear debris (Prevents nozzle from clogging for future use)

Hands-On Workshop

Posted by scott On October - 6 - 2011

This past week, we hosted a hands-on workshop at our facility demonstrating various post-processing methods recommended for Objet parts. We would like to thank everyone who attended. It turned out to be a very fun and informative experience. We were also fortunate enough to have a few Application Engineers fly out from Objet headquarters to join us and offer their expertise.  The workshop covered the following topics:

Exporting CAD models to STL files
Fixing corrupt files with Magics software
Creating print jobs with Objet Studio software
Cleaning parts via waterjet and sodium hydroxide
Sanding and polishing methods
Painting and dyeing techniques
Gluing with various adhesives
Other applications (silicon molding, tradeshows/exhibitions, etc.)

At the end of the day, all attendees took home an Objet part that they cleaned, polished, dyed, painted, and glued.

If you were not able to attend this event but want to learn more about these methods, or if you are interested in attending the next event, feel free to contact us at 877.345.4948 or scullum@kemeera.com
